Serengeti
The Plains Behind the Great Migration
Tanzania's best-known national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering a vast area of open plains and woodland. The same wildebeest herds that cross the Mara River in Kenya spend much of the year here, following the rains in a loop through the park.

Wildebeest & Zebra
Well over a million wildebeest move through the Serengeti-Mara system each year, with zebra and gazelle alongside.
Lion
Large prides live across the plains and the kopjes, the rocky outcrops that rise from them.
Cheetah
The open short-grass plains suit their hunting.
Leopard
Usually seen in the acacia and riverine trees.
Elephant
Present across the park, most often in the woodland and northern areas.
The Landscape
Ground That Shapes the Light
Open grass plains in the south, giving way to acacia woodland and rolling hills further north, with scattered granite kopjes and a handful of rivers running through it.
Best Season
June to October for the northern river crossings; January to March for calving on the southern plains
The herds move through the year, so the right area depends on the month. The park is rewarding at any time.
